About the Western Dressage Association of America

⭐ The Beginnings of Western Dressage

The idea of Western Dressage had been forming for many years. In 2007, several prominent trainers began discussing the horses they had trained—the successes, the challenges, and the lessons learned from countless conversations with riders and trainers across the industry. They realized that many people shared the same core concerns about training, horsemanship, and the future of the western horse.

By late 2010, these conversations led to a pivotal meeting in Dallas, Texas. The founding directors of the Western Dressage Association® of America (WDAA) met with David Brown, Larry Mahan, and Darrell Dodds of Western Horseman magazine. The discussion was inspiring and made it clear that the industry needed a central organization—one that would:

  • Honor the horse as a symbol of the American West

  • Value the partnership between horse and rider

  • Celebrate the heritage and landscape that shaped western horsemanship

  • Provide education and guidance for riders of all backgrounds

From this vision, the Western Dressage community began to take shape.

⭐ Core Principles That Shaped the Discipline

❤️ Love of the Horse

Every rider and trainer shares a deep appreciation for the horse. Many horses fail to reach their potential due to missteps in training. Classical Dressage principles—long used quietly by top western horsemen—offered a path toward better communication, balance, and partnership. Western Dressage gave this combination a name and a home, ensuring more horses and riders could benefit.

💲Expense
Training can be costly, especially in challenging economic times. Western Dressage clinics, demonstrations, and educational videos offer accessible, affordable learning opportunities. The WDAA website helps riders everywhere find these resources and learn from master horsemen and horsewomen.

🤝
 Inclusiveness

Western Dressage welcomes all breeds and all types of riders. Any horse that can walk, trot, and canter can participate. Whether a horse is a seasoned competitor or a trail partner, Classical Dressage principles applied to western horses improve communication, balance, and overall performance. Green colts benefit from a solid start; older horses rediscover purpose and engagement.

📈  Multilevel Entry and Involvement

Western Dressage offers a place for every rider:

  • Beginners enter a friendly, non‑intimidating environment
  • Intermediate riders refine their skills
  • Advanced riders deepen their precision and artistry

The discipline’s structured progression allows every horse and rider to grow at their own pace and become a success story.

🌄 Celebration and Stewardship of the American West

Western Dressage honors the landscapes that shaped western riding—from the Sierra Nevada trails to the Navajo paths of Arizona, from Rocky Mountain vistas to the vast Great Basin. The WDAA believes in preserving these places—public lands, arenas, ranches, and training facilities—so future generations can continue to ride, learn, and enjoy the western horse.
